Today, I had a great opportunity to learn from another 3rd grade teacher about her math practice in her room. Learning from other teachers is a great way for me to grow my own practice. The professional development opportunity today allowed me reflect on my current math practice and make a plan for using a math wall going forward.
My team and I are excited to try this math wall and model different kinds of math thinking with our students. For our first math wall, we are starting with some simple parts to help our students become more confident with their number sense, a skill area that needs focus. We have mapped out a few simple steps to follow with a 3 digit number. Our goal is to ask our class, “Show us what you know about this number?” With this simple question, we hope to hear from many voices in our math classroom.
I have 2 goals for this moving forward, first, that students become more independent with this practice and that they are confident to share their thinking. Second, when we get a grasp of the basic steps for our math wall that we can begin adding numberless problems, would you rather problems and open middle problems for low floor high ceiling activities.
I am hopeful that in a couple of months I will be updating you with our math wall successes, helping our students move toward confidence and mastery in grade level standards.
