Yesterday, looking at projects and listening you students was an energy builder. So was the summer work our team did around projects, building units that use resources effectively and give students voice and choice and empower them to take learning into their own hands.
The work that goes into creating and carrying out these projects can be messy. The stumbling blocks unpredictable, however, the process of learning with the students is a vulnerability that is so important. It shows them that we are lifetime learners, that nobody is perfect and that we trust them enough to learn along side of them.
There is also a level of vulnerability in sharing your work with colleagues. We are not islands, teaching alone. Seeking advice from colleagues, accepting feedback and changing a project with a colleague, seasoned or not, can feel humbling. What can we learn from this? That we are life long learners, that a shift in perspective can change a classroom, that someone’s advice can be great or not so great, that we need to trust ourselves, too and also, that everyone in the school has something to contribute to our community.
We can learn so much from each other, if you would like to get together and tune some projects with my team let me know. We are looking to center feedback and iteration this year and project tuning is a great place to start.
